Safe & Effective Home Remedies

I am so happy to be able to share some home remedies passed down generation to generation in my family. I will be sharing the ones that I have tried over the years that have been effective in healing. If you have any home remedies that have worked for you, I would love to hear about them.

Every week I will be introducing home remedies that have worked for me. Of course, I always stress to check with your Doctor before you start any new treatments.

Liver Detox Remedy

June 30, 2011

A home remedy that has been proven to be effective time and again in helping to achieve a complete body detox naturally, quickly, yet gentle on your system.. Blend together:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 inch fresh ginger, grated
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoon flax seed oil
  • 2 cups of fresh grapefruit juice***
  • *** (instead of grapefruit juice, use lemon if you are taking Blood Pressure medicine.)
Grate the ginger. Blend together grapefruit juice, lime juice, flax seed oil, water and the minced garlic. Drink about ¼ cup of this blend twice a day. This blend has amazing health benefits.

The ingredients firms up the lining of the GI tract, help the liver detoxify, ridding built up wastes, improves bowel movement, and cleans the colon.

Vegetables that are highly effective are broccoli, kale, cabbage, celery, lettuce, beet, asparagus, onion, Brussels sprouts, spinach, and fenugreek. Foods that help in a liver detox are lemon, orange, sweet lime, cranberry, mango, papaya, prunes, and raisins. Herbs used are ginger, garlic, cinnamon, fennel, caraway seeds, nutmeg, turmeric, coriander, and cayenne pepper.

Steer clear of refined foods, white flour, sugar, Trans fats, fried food and processed foods.

Try Tomato paste for boils. Apply the paste as a compress-great for pain and brings the boil to a head.

Toenail fungus-soak in Listerine. Also use apple cider vinegar and water. Both act as a natural antiseptic.

With children and pets and the summer months, head lice can be caught by anyone. Use Mayonnaise on the hair for 5 minutes, then shampoo. Use a small tooth comb and have a bowl of hot boiling water. Start at the scalp with the comb and comb straight down. Dip comb in hot water. Next strand, start at top and straight down then dip in hot water. One strand at a time with a hot water dip every time! If water cools, reheat it. Never go from side to side as you aren’t accomplishing anything. One strand, then dip. Start at one side of head and work your way around. Make sure all bed clothing and clothes are washed in hot water and dried on high heat.

Cranberry juice for urinary tract infection and stay away from acidic foods. Put Vaseline on sore area to keep from burning when urinating.

Nutritional Yeast

April 29,2011

Nutritional yeast is becoming a popular item to be kept in the cupboard. Not only does the cheesy flavor add zest to everything from popcorn to garlic bread, it is also a great source of B vitamins and is a protein seeker’s dream.

Not to be confused with other yeast such as Brewers, this yeast is a fungus but not from the beer brewing as Brewers is. The nutrients seem to be purer and the taste is so cheesy tasting compared to a more bitter taste of Brewers.

Nutritional Yeast is a Vegans dream for protein and also to get that B vitamin complex that a lot of Vegans need. Nutritional Yeast takes on an egg yolk flavor when used to substitute egg flavor with tofu. A chicken like taste seems to develop with the use of soy sauce.

It is not live yeast and not refrigeration is needed. It can be stored in a dark place in a tight covered jar.  Eczema, diabetes, and many other problems seem to be helped with the addition of Nutritional yeast to the diet.

Use it on salads, sandwiches, mashed and baked potatoes, garlic bread, popcorn and any dish that you want a little zest added.

**Mary Beth note: Do not let anyone tell you all yeast is the same. Nutritional yeast seems to have really helped my skin. I NEVER have used Brewers yeast.

Gout

March 18, 2011

Gout is a form of arthritis that can attack different areas of the body and can bring the strongest man to his knees.

Uric acid building up around the joint is one of the causes. Uric acid is a chemical created when the body breaks down substances called purines.

Purines are found in some foods and drinks, such as liver, dried beans and peas, beer, and wine. Anchovies, mackerel are also trigger foods.

Back in the day, Gout was considered the rich man’s disease because only the people with money could afford the rich sauces and shellfish that can sometime trigger a flare up. Many ads will target a relief for Gout but good old common sense is the best relief.

Acidic foods need to be eaten less and more alkalizing foods need to be entered into the diet. Your health food store or the computer can provide you with an acidic/alkalizing chart.

Strips to test for acidic level can be purchase at a health food store or drugstore. My recommendations that seem to work are: A hot rag wrapped around the painful area usually relieves the pain instantly. If the flare up is in the toe, soak your feet in the hottest water you can stand.

The hot rag seems to work well with all body pain. Cherry juice, especially black cherry juice, has been raved about. 8 ounces a day seems to be the norm for relief. Inflammation herbs such as Turmeric, celery seed, and juniper berries have also been used for the purpose of relieving the pain.

Most health food stores now have Uric Acid capsules to take. Two of my reader suggested these capsules. I hope some of this information will help. A couple of people have requested information on Kidney stones and Gallstones. My first thing to suggest is “Stone Free”. This is a capsule found at your health food store and have been vocalized loudly for its help with stones. More will be written about this at a later date.
